Prey Lang Forest (Cambodia)

Weather…

Prey Lang Forest is the largest remaining lowland evergreen forest in mainland Southeast Asia, covering approximately 431,000 hectares across four Cambodian provinces. The landscape is an ecological mosaic consisting of evergreen, semi-evergreen, and deciduous forests, including rare swamp forest sections. It serves as a sanctuary for over 50 globally threatened species, such as the Asian elephant, sun bear, and the giant ibis, Cambodia's national bird. The forest is deeply intertwined with the culture of the indigenous Kuy people, who rely on it for non-timber forest products and consider it a sacred spiritual domain. Despite being declared a wildlife sanctuary in 2016, the area faces severe threats from illegal logging and large-scale land concessions. Prey Lang is recognized as a critical carbon sink and a vital watershed regulator that maintains water levels for the Tonle Sap Lake and the Mekong River, making its preservation a matter of international ecological importance.
