Shabla is the easternmost town in Bulgaria, located near the Romanian border in a region that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Its crown jewel is the red-and-white striped lighthouse at Cape Shabla, built in 1856. It is the oldest and tallest functioning lighthouse on the Black Sea and is a scaled-down replica of the ancient Pharos of Alexandria. The coastline here is rugged and wild, featuring vast, uncrowded beaches like Ezerets, backed by pine forests. The nearby Shabla Lake is a protected wetland of international importance, serving as a vital stopover for thousands of migratory birds, including the rare red-breasted goose. The area is also famous for its healing mineral mud and peat deposits, used in local wellness treatments. Shabla is a haven for independent travelers, birdwatchers, and fishermen seeking peace and raw natural beauty. Don't miss the archaeological sites on the Karia island nearby. Located about 80 km north of Varna, Shabla is best reached by car. The best time for birdwatching is during the migration seasons in spring and autumn, while the summer months are well-suited for those looking to escape the crowds on some of the most serene beaches in the Balkans.
