💡 Tips
- Visit the beach at sunrise to experience the unique, quiet atmosphere before the parties start.
- Don't come by car on peak season weekends; parking is nearly impossible. Use the minibuses from Mangalia.
- Card payment is often unavailable. Make sure you have enough cash (Lei) with you.
- Take a walk across the border into Bulgaria (to nearby Durankulak), but check the current border requirements.
- Be careful with sea urchins if you enter the water in rocky areas.
🍽 Food
Fried anchovies with polenta and garlic sauce. You can find them at almost any beach terrace ('terasă').
Fresh mussels, often cooked in a wine sauce. Look for the smaller, more authentic fish restaurants, not necessarily on the main promenade.
A local cheese pie, excellent for a quick snack. Available at the bakeries ('patiserie') in the village.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Along the main alley leading to the beach, you'll find numerous stalls selling unique, handmade jewelry and clothes.
A classic souvenir that captures the spirit of the place. Available at most stalls.
Walk towards the Bulgarian border for more space and quiet, away from the main bars.
North of the village, the cliff features a panoramic view of the Black Sea and is a great spot for quiet moments.
Vama Veche in May or September is a completely different world: quiet, relaxed, and well-suited for long walks.

Vama Veche is the ultimate symbol of bohemian life and non-conformity in Romania. Located literally a few steps from the border with Bulgaria, it has evolved from a sleepy fishing village into a cult destination for rebels, artists, and music lovers. During the communist era, it was a safe haven for intellectuals; today, it remains the only place on the coast where rock, folk, and blues music strictly outweigh electronic dance beats. The 'Vama experience' involves sleeping in tents on the sand and gathering on the beach at dawn to watch the sunrise while Ravel’s Boléro plays from the speakers of the legendary 'Stuff' bar. The resort is famous for its relaxed 'no-dress-code' policy, open-air bonfires, and a general sense of community that is hard to find elsewhere. It is also one of the few places in Romania with a long tradition of social tolerance and nudist-friendly beach areas. Dining in Vama Veche is centered around 'cherhanas' (traditional fish shacks) serving the freshest Black Sea catch. Don't miss the giant pancakes or the famous goulash at 'Papa la Șoni'. While the village has seen significant commercial development recently, its soul remains tied to the Stufstock festival and the unwritten rule that in Vama, everyone is a friend. It is accessible by minibus from the nearby town of Mangalia.
