Kaliakra (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Cape Kaliakra is one of Bulgaria's most dramatic natural and historical landmarks, located on the northern Black Sea coast near Kavarna. This 2-km long, narrow headland is defined by its sheer 70-meter-high red limestone cliffs, which owe their color to iron oxides. Strategically positioned, it was first inhabited by the Thracians (Tirizis), and later fortified by Romans, Byzantines, and Bulgarians. The ruins of the medieval fortress, once the capital of the Despotate of Dobruja, stand as a testament to its military importance. Several legends haunt the cape, most famously the tale of the 40 maidens who tied their hair together and leapt to their deaths to escape Ottoman capture. At the very tip stands the small chapel of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. Today, Kaliakra is a nature reserve and a key observation point on the Via Pontica bird migration route. It is also one of the best places in Bulgaria to spot dolphins playing in the waters below the cliffs. A small museum housed in a natural cave displays archaeological artifacts found on-site. Visitors can also enjoy a meal at the panoramic restaurant overlooking the sea. Cape Kaliakra is about a 1-hour drive from Varna (75 km). The best time to visit is late afternoon to catch the sunset, when the red cliffs glow intensely. It remains an iconic destination for hikers, history buffs, and nature photographers alike.
