The Dormition of the Mother of God Cathedral is the undisputed landmark of the port city of Varna and one of the largest churches in Bulgaria. Its foundation stone was laid in 1880 by the Bulgarian Prince Alexander I Battenberg, with the architecture drawing significant influence from Saint Isaac's Cathedral in Saint Petersburg. The imposing building was officially opened in 1886 and is striking for its massive domes, which have been covered with a gleaming layer of gold since an extensive restoration in 2000. Inside the cathedral, visitors will find magnificent wall paintings completed in the 1950s, as well as an intricately carved iconostasis and a lavish bishop's throne. The cathedral serves as the seat of the Diocese of Varna and Preslav and is a central venue for religious festivities and national ceremonies. Especially in the evening hours, when the building is brightly illuminated, it defines the skyline of the city center. Its blend of Byzantine and Russian architectural elements makes it a unique monument on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.
