Aladzha Monastery (Bulgaria)

Weather…

Aladzha Monastery is the most famous medieval cave monastery along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast, located approximately 17 kilometers north of Varna. Carved into the soft limestone cliffs of a high ridge on two distinct levels, the complex dates back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The site includes a monastic church, numerous monk cells, a kitchen, a dining hall, and a small crypt. The name 'Aladzha' is of Turkish origin, meaning 'colorful' or 'bright,' a reference to the once-spirited frescoes that adorned its walls, of which only fragments remain today. During the 14th century, the monastery served as a prominent center for Hesychasm, a mystical movement within Orthodox Christianity. Following the Ottoman conquest of Bulgaria in the late 14th century, the monastery was abandoned but continued to serve as a local refuge for centuries. Today, the site features a museum detailing the history of Christian hermitism in the region.
