Zhemgang is located in the heart of central Bhutan and is one of the most pristine and biodiverse regions in the kingdom. The town serves as the headquarters of the Zhemgang District and is perched on a ridge facing the Jigme Singye Wangchuck National Park. The Zhemgang Dzong, founded in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, dominates the town's skyline and serves as the spiritual and administrative anchor for the region. Zhemgang is renowned throughout Bhutan for its traditional bamboo and cane craftsmanship, particularly the production of 'Bangchungs' (intricately woven baskets). The local people, known as Khengpas, have preserved their distinct dialect and deeply rooted cultural traditions. The region is a premier destination for birdwatchers, hosting over 500 species of birds and the rare Golden Langur monkey. Because of its remoteness, Zhemgang has maintained much of its original charm and tranquility. Its dense subtropical forests and numerous waterfalls make it a significant site for ecotourism. The town itself is small and quiet, with traditional architecture that blends harmoniously into the verdant landscape.
