Phobjikha Valley is a vast, U-shaped glacial valley situated at an altitude of 3000 meters in central Bhutan. It is most famous for being the winter residence of the endangered black-necked cranes that migrate from the Tibetan Plateau. Overlooking the valley is the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery, a significant religious site in the region. The area is highly popular among hikers, with the Gangtey Nature Trail offering a scenic route through pine forests and small rural settlements. The local economy is heavily reliant on potato farming and animal husbandry. To protect the flight paths of the migrating cranes, the government mandated that all electricity cables in the valley be buried underground. Visitors staying in local homestays can experience traditional Bhutanese life and try dishes like ema datshi and red rice. The most favorable time to visit is between late October and mid-February when the cranes are present. The annual Black-Necked Crane Festival takes place in November to celebrate their arrival. The valley is accessible via a mountain road from Wangdue Phodrang, crossing the Lawa La pass.
