Alden Biesen Commandery
Alden Biesen is a former grand commandery of the Teutonic Order located near Bilzen, and it stands as one of the largest castle complexes in Northern Europe. Established in the 13th century, the estate grew over hundreds of years to become the regional headquarters for the Order's Biesen province. The complex consists of an impressive moated castle, a dedicated church, several outbuildings, and extensive French formal gardens. A catastrophic fire in 1971 destroyed large portions of the castle, which subsequently led to a comprehensive and exemplary restoration project by the Belgian state. Today, Alden Biesen operates as an international cultural center and a venue for prestigious events, including the annual international storytelling festival. The gardens, reconstructed based on 18th-century historical designs, feature symmetrical boxwood hedges and ornate fountains in a classical Baroque style. Beyond its cultural functions, the commandery remains a vital historical record of European military and religious order history. Visitors can tour the ornate halls and learn about the daily lives and influence of the knights who once governed vast territories from this site.
