Roman Walls of Tongeren (Belgium)

Weather…

The Roman Walls of Tongeren (Atuatuca Tungrorum) represent a fascinating archaeological monument that transports visitors back to the era when Tongeren was the most important and oldest Gallo-Roman settlement in Belgium. In the 2nd century AD, the Roman administration ordered the construction of an impressive stone defensive wall to protect the flourishing, strategically important provincial capital and its accumulated wealth. The original city wall extended over an impressive length of approximately 4.5 kilometers, enclosing the vast area of the ancient city and featuring watchtowers and monumental gates. Today, highly visible fragments of this ancient fortification line, measuring up to a meter and a half thick, are still beautifully preserved. Later, during the 4th century, as threats from Germanic tribes intensified, the Romans retreated to a smaller, more defensible area and constructed a second, shorter wall. Archaeological walking trails running alongside the ruins offer profound insights into Roman engineering mastery and Tongeren's vital role as a commercial and military hub on the fringes of the Roman Empire.
