Lake Virelles (Lac de Virelles), located near the small town of Chimay in the Walloon province of Hainaut, is one of the most significant wetlands and water reserves in Belgium, covering an area of 125 hectares. Originally created in the 16th century to harness water power for the local iron and forging industries, the shallow lake has transformed over the centuries into a priceless biotope. Today, Lake Virelles is managed by the 'Aquascope Virelles', a large nature and environmental center dedicated to biodiversity conservation. A dense belt of reeds and aquatic plants surrounds the water surface, providing a safe nesting and resting site for thousands of migratory birds, including herons and great crested grebes. Visitors can study the rich birdlife from several well-hidden observation huts or explore the edges of the lake on guided nature walks.
