Lake Plate Taille
Lake Plate Taille (Lac de la Plate Taille), located in the Walloon province of Hainaut, is the largest lake in Belgium, covering an area of approximately 351 hectares. It is the centerpiece of the impressive Eau d'Heure lakes region (Lacs de l'Eau d'Heure), a complex system of five artificial reservoirs. Unlike the other lakes in the network, Lake Plate Taille was specifically designed as the upper basin for a massive pumped-storage hydroelectric power station. During periods of low electricity demand, water is pumped from the lower Lake Eau d'Heure into this upper basin, only to be released back down during peak hours to generate power. Beyond its industrial function, the lake has developed into one of the country's premier water sports centers. The prohibition of motorized boats makes it a handy spot for sailing, windsurfing, and scuba diving. Modern holiday villages, sandy beaches, and miles of cycling and hiking trails surround the lake.
