Tucked away in the verdant Avesnois region in the Nord department, Fourmies is a town intrinsically linked to the 19th-century textile boom and the broader history of the European labor movement. The town gained tragic historical prominence due to the Fusillade de Fourmies on May 1, 1891, when military forces fired on striking textile workers demanding an eight-hour workday, an event that deeply influenced French labor rights. To immerse oneself in this industrial legacy, a visit to the Écomusée de l'Avesnois, specifically the Musée du Textile et de la Vie Sociale, is essential. Housed in a former spinning mill, the museum meticulously operates fully functional 19th-century textile machines, demonstrating the noisy, intense reality of the era's factories. Beyond its industrial heritage, Fourmies is surrounded by thick forests, rolling hills, and numerous small lakes known as the étangs des Moines, great for hiking, fishing, and outdoor recreation. The town features a unique blend of grand bourgeois mansions once owned by textile barons and the modest brick homes of the former working class.
