Abbey of Aulne (Belgium)

Weather…

The Abbey of Aulne located in Gozée near the town of Thuin is a remarkable complex of ruins belonging to a former Cistercian monastery. Founded in the 7th century by Saint Landelin it grew into one of the most powerful and wealthy abbeys in the Diocese of Liège during the Middle Ages. Known as the 'Valley of Peace' due to its serene location along the Sambre river the abbey featured magnificent Gothic and Baroque structures that showcased its importance. However the abbey's prosperity ended abruptly in 1794 when French revolutionary troops set fire to the complex leading to its near-total destruction. The surviving ruins which include the massive nave of the abbey church and parts of the cloister provide a hauntingly beautiful glimpse into its former grandeur. Today the site is a popular destination for tourists and hikers who are drawn to the mystical atmosphere of the weathered stones and the lush surrounding gardens. The abbey also remains connected to the region's culinary heritage through its namesake beers which are brewed nearby using traditional methods.
