The Gruuthusemuseum in Bruges is housed in one of the most magnificent and best-preserved 15th-century city palaces, offering a fascinating glimpse into the immense wealth of the Burgundian era. The building was once the luxurious residence of the influential van Gruuthuse family, most notably Lodewijk van Gruuthuse, a prominent diplomat, art patron, and knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. The name 'Gruuthuse' derives from the family's lucrative monopoly on the trade of 'gruut', a medieval herbal mixture essential for brewing beer. Today, the museum safeguards an extremely extensive and diverse collection of applied arts and everyday objects dating from the 15th to the 19th centuries, including exquisite Flemish tapestries, delicate lace, historical weaponry, and silverware. A highly unique architectural feature of the palace is the ornate, wood-carved private prayer oratory that connects the house directly to the choir of the adjacent Church of Our Lady, clearly reflecting the family's immense social status.
