Belfry of Bruges (Belgium)

Weather…

The Belfry of Bruges (Belfort), an iconic 83-meter-high bell tower towering over the central Market Square, is arguably the historic city's most famous landmark and a proud symbol of Flemish civic independence and immense medieval wealth. Construction of the monumental tower began in 1240 as an extension of the Cloth Halls, the economic nerve center of Bruges where renowned Flemish cloth was stored and traded. Over the centuries, the tower suffered devastating fires on several occasions (most notably in 1280 and 1493), leading to repeated reconstructions and architectural modifications, including the distinctive octagonal upper tier added in the late 15th century. The tower served not only as a watchtower to detect fires or approaching enemies but also housed the city archives, the municipal treasury, and an impressive carillon of 47 bells whose melodies still regularly ring out today. Visitors willing to conquer the 366 steep steps are rewarded with spectacular panoramic views over the UNESCO-protected historic center of Bruges.
