Eupen is the capital and the undisputed cultural center of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, located in the province of Liège in eastern Belgium. The appealing city is situated at the confluence of the Vesdre and Helle rivers, right on the edge of the easy on the eye High Fens-Eifel Nature Park. Historically, Eupen achieved great wealth in the 18th and 19th centuries through a flourishing cloth industry. This era still characterizes the cityscape today, which is marked by magnificent Baroque burgher houses and cloth merchants' residences from the 18th century. Main attractions include St. Nicholas Church with its distinctive twin towers. Just a few kilometers from the center lies the Vesdre Dam (Wesertalsperre), Belgium's most important drinking water reservoir, which is a popular excursion destination for hiking and cycling. Eupen uniquely combines historical heritage, lived bilingualism, and immediate proximity to panoramic nature.
