Citadel of Mons (Belgium)

Weather…

The Citadel of Mons was located on the highest point of the city, a strategic hill that had been fortified since the Middle Ages. Originally, the castle of the Counts of Hainaut stood here, which was replaced in the 17th century by modern fortifications. The citadel was reinforced under the direction of the famous engineer Vauban to protect Mons against attacks. In the 19th century, most of the defensive structures were demolished as part of urban development, and the site was transformed into a public park. Today, the rich history of the location is remembered through the majestic Belfry (Beffroi) of Mons, a UNESCO World Heritage site situated directly adjacent to the grounds. Visitors can stroll through the park and enjoy a wide view over the city and the surrounding Borinage region from the hilltop.
