Strépy-Thieu Boat Lift (Belgium)

Weather…

The Strépy-Thieu boat lift, a true cathedral of modern engineering, dominates the landscape near La Louvière. This gigantic infrastructural masterpiece was inaugurated in 2002 and is an essential link in the Belgian waterway network, making the Canal du Centre navigable and establishing a direct connection between the Meuse and Scheldt river systems. With an impressive lifting height of over 73 meters, it overcame a previously massive natural barrier and replaced several outdated locks, as well as four historic hydraulic lifts that are now part of the UNESCO World Heritage. The commissioning of Strépy-Thieu allowed the passage of modern inland vessels up to 1,350 tonnes, drastically increasing freight capacity and massively reducing transport times. The boat lift is thus a crucial driver for environmentally friendly inland navigation and a monument to the economic modernization of Wallonia.
