Abbey of Flône (Belgium)

Weather…

The Abbey of Flône located on the banks of the Meuse river in the municipality of Amay has a long and storied history dating back to the late 11th century. Founded in 1075 by three brothers seeking a life of solitude and prayer it eventually grew into a major establishment for the Premonstratensian Order. The architectural ensemble reflects centuries of evolution featuring Romanesque foundations Gothic expansions and Baroque finishing touches. The abbey church is particularly noted for its 18th-century pipe organ and beautifully carved wooden choir stalls which are masterpieces of Walloon craftsmanship. During the French Revolution the monks were expelled and the abbey was secularized but most of its historic buildings survived the upheaval. Today the site serves as a prominent educational center while maintaining its status as a protected cultural monument. Its unique position between the river and the limestone cliffs provides a striking visual setting and emphasizes the historic importance of the Meuse as a corridor for monastic development in the region.
