Abbey of Grandpré (Belgium)

Weather…

The Abbey of Grandpré, positioned in the scenic Samson valley within the municipality of Faulx-les-Tombes, possesses a long and storied religious history. It was founded in 1231 as a Cistercian monastery, operating under the direct authority of the Abbey of Villers. During its golden age in the Middle Ages and the early modern period, it served as a significant center for agriculture and spirituality in the region. Most of the buildings still visible today, such as the monumental gatehouse built in 1739, date from the 17th and 18th centuries when the abbey underwent extensive reconstruction. Following the French Revolution, the abbey was secularized in 1796 and the monks were expelled. Parts of the complex were later adapted for residential and agricultural use. Despite the loss of some monastic wings, the surviving architecture, particularly the ornate portal, still reflects the former wealth and prominence of this cloister.
