Modave Castle
Modave Castle, perched majestically on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Hoyoux Valley in the province of Liège, is a jewel of Walloon classical architecture. While its foundations are medieval, the castle owes its current grand appearance to a major 17th-century renovation by Count Jean-Gaspard-Ferdinand de Marchin. The castle is internationally renowned for its exquisite plasterwork ceilings by artist Jan-Christian Hansche, widely regarded as some of the finest in Europe. A significant historical feature was the 'Modave Machine,' a pioneering hydraulic system designed by Rennequin Sualem to pump water from the river below, which later served as the model for the famous Marly Machine at Versailles. The interior showcases lavishly furnished rooms with rare tapestries, Baroque furniture, and historical paintings. The surrounding estate features formal gardens and terraces offering sweeping views of the protected Hoyoux nature reserve. Currently managed by the Brussels water company (CIBE), the castle is open as a museum, providing an authentic look at 17th-century aristocratic life.
