Citadel of Huy (Belgium)

Weather…

The Citadel of Huy also known locally as 'Li Tchestia' stands on a commanding rock overlooking the Meuse river in the province of Liège. The current fortress was constructed between 1818 and 1823 during the Dutch administration of the region replacing an ancient medieval castle that had stood there since the 9th century. As a prime example of 19th-century military engineering the citadel formed a key part of the Meuse line defense intended to deter French expansion. During World War II the site served a grim purpose as a German prison camp where more than 7,000 resistance fighters and civilians were held captive. Today the citadel is an officially recognized national memorial and houses the Museum of Resistance and Concentration Camps within its grim stone corridors. A cable car provides easy access from the town center to the summit offering visitors panoramic views of the historic cityscape and the surrounding industrial valley. The citadel remains a powerful symbol of both military might and human endurance in the face of oppression.
