Mount Sabalan (Iran)

Weather…

Mount Sabalan is a massive inactive stratovolcano that, with a peak elevation of 4811 meters, is the third highest mountain in Iran. It is located in the northwestern Ardabil province, a short distance from the border with Azerbaijan. The most prominent attraction of the mountain range is the spectacular permanent crater lake found at its summit, which is covered by a thick layer of ice for most of the year and only thaws briefly during the late summer months. On the lower slopes of the volcano, particularly near the city of Sarein, numerous hot thermal springs emerge, rich in minerals and known for their therapeutic effects. The mountain block also plays a significant role in local culture, with certain Zoroastrian traditions revering it as a sacred site.

🧭
Getting there
Access to this majestic stratovolcano typically begins from the city of Meshgin Shahr or Ardabil. Dirt roads usually lead to the base camps, commonly accessible by local four-wheel-drive vehicles.
📅
Best season
The peak climbing window is generally during the warm summer months from late June to early September. Winter ascents are possible but require facing extreme cold and significant snow accumulations.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The standard routes present mostly non-technical but persistent steep hiking across volcanic rock and scree slopes. Approaching the memorable crater lake involves navigating rocky ridges at high elevation.
🎒
What to bring
Reliable trekking boots, trekking poles for the scree, and multiple layers of clothing are highly advised. Even in summer, temperatures near the summit crater can drop rapidly and unexpectedly.
