Karwendel Nature Park, spanning approximately 727 square kilometres, is the largest nature park in Austria, covering almost the entire Karwendel massif within the Tyrolean borders. Parts of the area were placed under protection as early as 1928, making it one of the oldest nature reserves in the Eastern Alps. The landscape is characterised by striking limestone cliffs, deep valleys, and expansive alpine meadows, with the Birkkarspitze reaching the highest point at 2,749 metres. The park provides crucial sanctuary for specialised high-mountain species such as the golden eagle, chamois, and alpine marmot. Particularly significant are the pristine wild rivers, including the source of the Isar, and the extensive sycamore maple forests found in the Großer Ahornboden area. In addition to conservation, the park serves as a major hub for environmental education and alpine research. Hikers and mountaineers can access an extensive network of trails, which are managed under strict ecological guidelines to minimise disturbance to wildlife. The park's administration operates cross-border, in close coordination with the Bavarian alpine authorities.
