Ambras Castle in Innsbruck is one of Tyrol's most significant sights and is regarded as the oldest museum in the world. Archduke Ferdinand II had the medieval fortress converted into a magnificent Renaissance palace in the 16th century for his wife, Philippine Welser. One of the main attractions is the Chamber of Art and Curiosities (Kunst- und Wunderkammer), a unique collection of rarities, scientific instruments, and precious artworks that reflects the Renaissance passion for collecting. Equally impressive is the 43-meter-long Spanish Hall, one of the most beautiful free-standing halls of the Renaissance, adorned with magnificent portraits of Tyrolean territorial princes. The Lower Castle also houses important armories containing the armor of famous commanders and tournament equipment. The castle is surrounded by an extensive palace park laid out in the style of an English landscape garden. As part of the Kunsthistorisches Museum Vienna, it now houses one of the most important Habsburg portrait galleries, documenting the dynasty's history in an impressive manner.
