Mar Chiquita (Argentina)

Weather…

Mar Chiquita, also known as the Ansenuza Sea, is a massive endorheic salt lake in the northeast of Córdoba Province. It is one of the largest salt lakes in the world and the most significant wetland in central Argentina. The salinity of the water varies significantly depending on rainfall levels, occasionally reaching concentrations similar to the Dead Sea during dry periods. This unique environment provides a vital habitat for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds, most notably three species of flamingos that breed here in enormous colonies. In 2022, the area was declared the Ansenuza National Park to permanently protect its fragile biodiversity and vast mudflats. The town of Miramar on its shores is a popular spa destination, utilizing the therapeutic properties of the lake's salty water and mineral-rich mud.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This absolutely massive, highly impressive salt lake in Córdoba Province is most easily accessed from the town of Miramar, which gives wonderfully well-developed tourist infrastructure situated directly on the southern shore.
📅
Best season
Spring and autumn are widely considered the absolute best seasons to visit, as temperatures are pleasingly moderate and gigantic, brilliantly colorful flocks of flamingos and other fascinating migratory birds populate the region.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The shoreline area consists primarily of very flat, incredibly muddy beaches and wonderfully shallow waters, which can become extremely boggy depending on water levels. Developed paths mostly exist only near the town promenade.
🎒
What to bring
A high-powered pair of binoculars for serious birdwatching is undoubtedly the most important tool. Furthermore, highly effective insect repellent, rubber boots or washable shoes for the salty mud, and a good sun hat are highly advisable.
🅿️
Parking
In the incredibly appealing town of Miramar, visitors easily find numerous paved parking spaces located directly near the beach. At more remote nature observation spots, cars are parked safely on solid ground right along the roadside.
⚠️
Safety
The incredibly soft, highly treacherous mud in some specific shore zones can be surprisingly deep, which is why one should definitely not wade out too far. Additionally, bothersome swarms of mosquitoes can emerge during the hot summer months.
