Jesuit Estancia of Alta Gracia (Argentina)

Weather…

Estancia Alta Gracia is one of the five Jesuit estancias in the Córdoba Province, established to fund the educational work in Córdoba city. It was founded in 1643 through the acquisition of land that had previously belonged to the encomendero Alonso Nieto de Herrera. The estancia rapidly developed into a productive center for livestock, agriculture, and textile manufacturing. Architecturally, it is notable for its church with a Baroque facade, the residence, and the 'Tajamar,' an artificial lake created in 1659 to power mills and irrigation systems. Following the Jesuit expulsion in 1767, the estancia passed through several hands, including those of Viceroy Santiago de Liniers. Located in the city of Alta Gracia, the estancia is now a significant museum providing insights into colonial life, slave labor, and Jesuit administration. The site was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2000 as part of the Jesuit ensemble of Córdoba and stands as an outstanding example of the fusion of religious architecture and economic functionality.
