House of Viceroy Liniers (Argentina)

Weather…

The Casa del Virrey Liniers is located in the San Telmo district of Buenos Aires and is one of the city's oldest surviving residential buildings. Built around 1788, it served as the residence of Santiago de Liniers, the hero of the reconquest during the British invasions of 1806 and 1807. The house holds immense historical significance as the site where the terms for the surrender of British troops led by General William Beresford were negotiated in 1806. Architecturally, it exemplifies the typical colonial style with thick masonry walls, high ceilings, and a central courtyard. Over the decades, the building has served various purposes, including a publishing house and a school, before undergoing restoration. Today, it houses the Historical Archive of the City of Buenos Aires, serving as a key research center for urban history. Casa Liniers remains a testament to the political and social dynamics of the late Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata. Its preservation allows visitors to experience the urban lifestyle of the early 19th century, on the eve of Argentine independence.
