San Francisco Church of Salta (Argentina)

Weather…

The Church of San Francisco in Salta is one of the most photographed buildings in northwestern Argentina. It is distinguished by its striking terracotta and gold-colored facade and its 54-meter-high bell tower, which is considered one of the tallest of its kind in South America. The current building was begun in the late 18th century and completed in the late 19th century under the direction of architect Luis Giorgi. The church is part of a Franciscan convent and houses a valuable library and a museum of religious art. In 1941, the structure was declared a National Historic Monument. The architectural blend of colonial style and Italianate influences gives the church a unique aesthetic, which is particularly enhanced at night by an impressive lighting system that highlights its intricate details.
