Sé Cathedral of Luanda (Angola)

Weather…

The Sé Cathedral of Luanda, officially the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios, is the seat of the Archdiocese of Luanda and one of the oldest standing structures in the city. Construction began in 1655 following the Portuguese reconquest of Luanda from the Dutch and was completed in 1679. The architectural design blends Baroque and Neoclassical elements, characterized by its twin towers topped with pyramidal spires. In 1818, it was officially elevated to the status of a cathedral, replacing older religious seats in the colony. Throughout its history, the cathedral has undergone several transformations, most notably in the 1940s when a major restoration was required after part of its roof collapsed. The restoration preserved the historic facade while modernizing the interior spaces. As a designated national heritage site, the cathedral stands as a symbol of the enduring Catholic influence in Angola and continues to be a spiritual anchor in Luanda's historic Baixa district.
