Fortaleza de São Miguel (Angola)

Weather…

The Fortaleza de São Miguel is the oldest surviving structure in Luanda, crowning São Miguel Hill overlooking the bay. It was built in 1576 by Paulo Dias de Novais, the founder of Luanda, and served for centuries as the city's primary defense center. The fortress has a turbulent history, including a brief occupation by the Dutch between 1641 and 1648. Inside the thick walls are elaborate tiles (azulejos) depicting scenes from Angolan history, as well as a collection of historical weapons. Today, the complex houses the National Museum of Military History, providing deep insight into the struggle for independence and the colonial past. From the fortress ramparts, visitors have a panoramic view of Luanda's modern skyline and the harbor, highlighting the contrast between tradition and modernity.
