Palácio de Ferro (Angola)

Weather…

The Palácio de Ferro in Luanda is a striking example of 19th-century European iron architecture transported to the African continent. Prefabricated in France, the building is widely attributed to the studio of Gustave Eiffel, though definitive historical records of his personal involvement are missing. The structure was originally intended for an international exhibition in Madagascar but arrived on the coast of Luanda around 1890 following a shipwreck or a maritime diversion. Constructed almost entirely of cast iron painted in an animated yellow, it features elegant wraparound balconies designed to withstand the humid tropical climate. During the colonial era, it served as an art gallery and administrative office, but it fell into severe disrepair during the years of the Angolan Civil War. Following a meticulous restoration project, the palace was reopened in 2016 as a cultural center, standing today as one of the most iconic and photographed landmarks in the heart of Luanda.
