Cuanhama is a historically significant municipality in Angola's southern Cunene Province, centered around the city of Ondjiva. The region is the homeland of the Kwanyama people, a subgroup of the Ovambo, renowned for their prolonged resistance against Portuguese colonization in the early 20th century. Geographically, the area is characterized by flat plains that are flooded during the rainy season by the Cuvelai-iishanas (shallow drainage channels). These seasonal floods are essential for local livestock rearing and agriculture, though they also pose significant infrastructural challenges. During the independence war and the South African Border War, Ondjiva was occupied several times and heavily damaged, requiring extensive reconstruction after 2002. Today, Cuanhama serves as a vital economic hub near the Namibian border, with cross-border trade forming the backbone of local development.
