Planoles is a pleasant municipality in the Catalan comarca of Ripollès, situated near the borders of both Andorra and France. The village lies in the Rigard river valley at an elevation of approximately 1100 meters, surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Eastern Pyrenees. The history of Planoles traces back to the Middle Ages, with the 12th-century Romanesque church of Sant Vicenç serving as its most prominent historical monument. The village's architecture is defined by characteristic Catalan stone houses featuring wooden balconies and slate roofs. Planoles is renowned for its exceptional air quality and pleasant mountain climate, which made it a popular summer retreat as early as the beginning of the 20th century. The village is accessible via the historic railway line from Barcelona to Latour-de-Carol (known as the 'Transpirinenc'), which significantly aided its development. The surrounding area features numerous hiking trails, including routes to the Puigmal summit, encouraging outdoor activities in unspoiled nature.
