It is characterized by its thick body, broad triangular head, and a notably upturned snout, which distinguishes it from other local snakes. Its coloration, ranging from grey to earthy browns with dark zig-zag or barred patterns, gives superb camouflage among the limestone and granite rocks. As a cold-blooded predator, it relies on morning sunbathing sessions to gain the energy needed for hunting small mammals and lizards. Best season
The asp viper is active on the sunny rocky slopes of Andorra la Vella mainly from April to October. In spring and autumn temperatures are mild, so the snakes are often found sunbathing on the rocks.
Best time of day
Early morning, as soon as the sun warms the rocks, the vipers emerge from their hiding places to warm up. Around noon they retreat to the shade, but late afternoon they are active again hunting.
Etiquette
Never step into crevices or under overhanging rocks without first looking inside. If you encounter a viper, stay calm and slowly back away - it only attacks when it feels threatened.
What to bring
Sturdy hiking boots with good grip and long trousers made of thick fabric are the best protection against bites. A walking stick can help probe the path ahead and scare off snakes early.
