Casa Cristo

Casa Cristo in Encamp is a unique 'domestic museum' that, in contrast to the grand manor houses, documents the true, modest life of an Andorran working-class family (landless peasants or 'jornalers') at the end of the 19th century. The house remained almost unchanged after the last residents left in 1947 and was opened as a museum in 1995. Across three narrow floors, visitors can marvel at the sparse yet functional furnishings that speak of the hardships of daily life in the mountains. The bottom floor served as a pantry and workshop, while the middle floor housed the kitchen with its characteristic open hearth and the only heated living space. The top floor contains the bedrooms, where personal items, clothing, and simple furniture reflect the social reality of that period. The site's authenticity is particularly striking; it feels as though the inhabitants have only just stepped out. Casa Cristo is a vital monument to Andorra's social history, providing a necessary contrast to romanticized notions of rural life.
