Sant Miquel d'Engolasters

The Church of Sant Miquel d'Engolasters is one of the most recognizable symbols of Romanesque art in Andorra, perched on a natural terrace overlooking the Escaldes-Engordany valley. Constructed in the 12th century, the building follows the classic model of Andorran rural churches, featuring a rectangular nave, a semicircular apse, and an impressive 17-meter-high bell tower. This square Lombard-style tower is the church's most striking feature and likely served as a lookout post in the past. The exterior of the apse is decorated with typical Lombard blind arches and columns. Inside, the church was once adorned with magnificent murals, including a famous depiction of Christ Pantocrator surrounded by the symbols of the Evangelists. While the originals of these frescoes are now kept in the National Art Museum of Catalonia in Barcelona, visitors can admire faithful reconstructions on-site.
