Lëkurësi Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Lëkurësi Castle sits atop a strategic hill overlooking the coastal city of Sarandë, providing a commanding view of the bay and the nearby island of Corfu. It was constructed in 1537 by the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent during his military campaign against Corfu, serving to protect the harbor and control maritime traffic. The fortress features a square layout with two round towers at the northwest and southeast corners, and a rectangular tower on the western wall. Historically, the area within the walls contained the village of Lëkurës, which was eventually abandoned in the 19th century. The defensive walls reach a thickness of up to two meters in certain sections, underscoring its former military significance. Today, the castle is one of the most visited sites on the Albanian Riviera, functioning as a cultural landmark and viewpoint where visitors can appreciate both historical Ottoman engineering and modern hospitality services.
