Its modern name is derived from the Monastery of the Forty Saints (Agioi Saranda), whose 6th-century ruins still overlook the town from a nearby hilltop. A major historical landmark is Lëkurësi Castle, built in 1537 by Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent to secure the coastline against invaders. The city center also hosts the ruins of a 5th-century synagogue, reflecting a long history of multicultural influences.
