Kaninë Castle (Albania)

Weather…

Kaninë Castle is perched on Shushica Mountain at an altitude of 380 meters above sea level, overlooking the coastal city of Vlorë in southwestern Albania. Its origins trace back to the 4th century BC, when it was established as an Illyrian settlement by the Chaonian tribe. In the 6th century AD, the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I significantly expanded the fortress to bolster coastal defenses and monitor the maritime routes toward Italy. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle frequently changed hands between Byzantines, Normans, Bulgarians, and Venetians until it was captured by the Ottomans in 1417. Spanning nearly 4 hectares, the fortress provides a commanding panoramic view of the Bay of Vlorë and the Karaburun Peninsula. It is also historically notable as the seat of the Arianiti family during the 15th century, playing a pivotal role in local resistance efforts. Today, the extensive stone ruins and bastions stand as a testament to over two millennia of military architecture and strategic significance.
