💡 Tips

  • Hike up to Himara Castle in the late afternoon for memorable sunset views over the Ionian Sea and to avoid the midday heat.
  • The town has a modern beach promenade and a historic old town on the hill; don't miss the old town for an authentic feel.
  • Many locals speak Greek here due to the region's heritage; greeting them with 'Yassas' is as common as the Albanian 'Tungjatjeta'.
  • Parking near the main beaches can be very difficult in summer; try parking slightly inland and walk down to the coast.

Sweet honey puffs, first-rate for dessert; look for them at bakeries near the beach.

Himarë is the cultural and administrative center of the Albanian Riviera, offering a fascinating blend of history, beach life, and authentic culture. The town lies in a wide bay on the Ionian Sea and is framed by the high peaks of the Ceraunian Mountains. A must-see is the old Himarë Castle (Kala), perched on a hill above the modern town. Within the castle walls, ruins from various eras coexist with inhabited stone houses and small churches, allowing for a journey back in time. The beaches in and around Himarë are among Albania's best. The city beach Spile is easily accessible, while coves like Llaman, Potam, or Livadhi are just outside and known for their crystal-clear water and relaxed atmosphere. The region is strongly bilingual (Albanian and Greek), which is reflected in the gastronomy. Here you will find an excellent selection of Greek specialties like souvlaki and moussaka combined with Albanian classics like byrek and grilled lamb. Compared to Sarandë, Himarë has retained a quieter and more family-oriented character. The waterfront promenade invites evening strolls, where you can enjoy the sunset in numerous cafes with a glass of local raki or wine. The surroundings also offer great opportunities for hikes to nearby mountain villages like Pilur, from where you have one of the region's best panoramic views. The best time to visit is from May to October. For hikers, spring and autumn are convenient, while sun worshippers prefer the warm months of July and August. Access from Tirana is possible either via the spectacular coastal road (Llogara Pass) or the newer inland road. Himarë is the good spot for travelers seeking seaside relaxation with cultural depth.
