Himara Castle, situated at the heart of the Albanian Riviera, is one of the oldest continuously inhabited fortresses in the country. Its foundations date back to the 5th century BC, established by the Illyrian tribe of the Chaonians as the ancient city of Chimaira. The fortress was constructed on a steep hill overlooking the Ionian Sea and surrounding valleys, providing a significant strategic advantage for millennia. During the Byzantine era, the fortifications were strengthened, and the site evolved into a major religious center, evidenced by several churches within the walls, including the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus. The architecture displays a blend of ancient cyclopean masonry, medieval additions, and Ottoman modifications. Despite numerous sieges by various regional powers, the castle remained a symbol of local resistance and autonomy. Today, visitors can walk through the narrow alleys of the old town within the fortress walls, experiencing the unique historical continuity of this Mediterranean landmark.

The castle ruins are accessible from the outside at any time, as they sit on an open hill. The interior of the former settlement can be explored freely, but the old churches do not have fixed visiting hours.

For a leisurely walk across the entire hill area and visiting the churches, you should plan about one hour. Those who want to enjoy the surrounding nature and the view of the Ionian Sea can easily spend two hours.

Getting there

The castle is accessible on foot from the town of Himara in about 20 minutes via a steep but well-trodden path. By car, you can drive up to a parking lot at the foot of the hill and then walk the last few meters.

Visit the castle in the late afternoon when the light is best for photos and the temperatures are more pleasant. Bring enough water with you as there are no refreshment facilities on the hill.
