The Cukal-Mali i Zi protected area is located in northern Albania, east of Shkodër, encompassing the Cukal massif and the Mali i Zi (Black Mountain) range. Geologically, the region is defined by massive limestone, resulting in a rugged, fractured landscape with deep gorges and numerous caves. Elevations range from the valleys of the Kir River to peaks exceeding 1,700 meters. Botanically, the area serves as a transition zone between Mediterranean vegetation at lower levels and alpine flora on the ridges. Particularly valuable are the populations of the endemic plant 'Wulfenia baldaccii,' which is found only in this specific part of Albania and Montenegro. The region plays a crucial ecological role as a buffer zone for Lake Shkodër and as a watershed for the hydroelectric plants on the Drin River. Human settlement is sparse and restricted to small mountain villages dependent on subsistence farming and livestock.
