Butrint National Park (Albania)

Weather…

Butrint National Park in southern Albania covers an area of approximately 94 square kilometers and protects a unique combination of ancient ruins and valuable wetlands. The centerpiece is the archaeological site, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1992 and shows traces from the Bronze Age through the Roman era to Venetian rule. Geographically, the park is located at a strategic strait between the Ionian Sea and Lake Butrint. The flora and fauna are equally significant, as the lagoons and marshes provide habitat for over 800 plant species and rare migratory birds. Visitors can find well-preserved structures here, such as the ancient theater, Roman baths, and an early Christian basilica with mosaics. The modern significance of the park lies in the link between cultural heritage and ecological protection, making it one of the country's most important research sites. The park was established in its current form in 2000 and includes the Vivari canal system.
