Darul Aman Palace
Darul Aman Palace, whose name means 'abode of peace,' is an iconic but scarred landmark on the outskirts of Kabul. It was built in the late 1920s under the reign of King Amanullah Khan as part of his ambitious project to modernize Afghanistan. Designed in the European neoclassical style, the palace was intended to become the heart of a new, modern capital and house a new parliament. However, Amanullah Khan's reforms met with resistance, and he was forced into exile in 1929, leaving the palace unfinished. Over the decades, the building was damaged multiple times by fire and conflict, especially during the Soviet-Afghan War and the subsequent civil war in the 1990s, which turned it into a burnt-out ruin. Since 2016, the palace has been fully restored in an elaborate national project and today shines in new splendor as a symbol of Afghanistan's resilience and national reconstruction.
