Bala Hissar (Afghanistan)

Weather…

Bala Hissar is a massive, ancient fortress that sits majestically on a hill overlooking the city of Kabul. Its origins can be traced back to the 5th century, and it served as a strategic military base and royal residence for over 1,500 years. The fortress, whose name means 'High Fortress,' has witnessed countless historical events, from the arrival of the Mughals to the Anglo-Afghan Wars. It consists of a lower fortress for troops and stables and an upper fortress that housed the palace and royal chambers. During the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1879, Bala Hissar was severely damaged by an explosion in the armory and subsequently partially demolished by British troops. Despite the destruction and decay, the imposing walls and bastions remain a powerful symbol of Afghan history, resilience, and national identity. Today, efforts are underway to preserve the historic site and develop it as an archaeological park.
