Kabul Zoo (Afghanistan)

Weather…

Kabul Zoo, opened in 1967, is the only zoological garden in Afghanistan and a place of special social significance. In its better days, it housed hundreds of animals and was a popular destination for families and school classes. The zoo suffered severely from decades of conflict; many animals were killed or died of starvation. The story of Marjan the lion, who survived the war years and became a symbol of resilience, became famous. After 2001, the zoo was rebuilt and restocked with international aid. Today, it once again serves as an important educational institution and has the war-torn residents of Kabul, especially children, a rare opportunity for recreation and contact with wildlife. It remains a symbol of hope and the slow reconstruction of civilian life.
