Lake Zorkul (Afghanistan)

Weather…

Lake Zorkul is a remote high-altitude lake in the Pamir Mountains, forming the border between Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is situated at an impressive elevation of approximately 4,130 meters in a wide plateau surrounded by mountains. The lake covers an area of about 39 square kilometers and is the source of the Pamir River, a major tributary of the Amu Darya. The environment around Lake Zorkul is characterized by an extremely cold alpine climate and sparse vegetation. The area is a significant refuge for rare wildlife, including the Marco Polo sheep and the snow leopard. On the Tajik side, the lake belongs to the Sorkul Reserve, while on the Afghan side, it is part of the Wakhan Corridor. Due to its strategic location and difficult accessibility, the lake has remained largely untouched by human interference. Historically, the region was part of the Silk Road, with travelers having to cross high passes to reach the lake. Today, Lake Zorkul is primarily known for its ecological significance and its rugged, natural beauty.
