Great Mosque of Sanaa (Yemen)

Weather…

The Great Mosque of Sana'a is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in the world, serving as a cornerstone of Islamic heritage in Yemen. According to historical accounts, it was founded in the 7th century following instructions from the Prophet Muhammad during his lifetime, and was later expanded under the Umayyad Caliphs around 707 AD. The mosque's architecture incorporates materials from pre-Islamic structures, including columns and capitals from the ancient Himyarite Palace of Ghumdan. The building is centered around a large open courtyard (sahn) and is characterized by its dignified, unadorned style using dark basalt stone and white gypsum accents. The mosque gained global academic fame in 1972 when a hidden cache of 'Sana'a manuscripts' was discovered in the roof void, containing some of the oldest known Quranic fragments in existence. It remains an active place of worship and a vital part of the UNESCO-listed Old City of Sana'a.
